Cooking for Change: Creating Second Chances Through Food in La Porte

Cooking for Change is a nonprofit program founded in 2021 by Chef John Moultrie, owner of Bistro on the Greens in La Porte, Indiana. What started during the challenges of the pandemic quickly turned into a mission-driven initiative helping young people turn their lives around through the power of culinary arts.

Focused on individuals aged 16 to 24, the program offers hands-on restaurant training to those facing tough circumstances, including homelessness, incarceration, substance recovery, or educational setbacks. Over the course of about six months, participants gain real-world kitchen experience, build soft skills like teamwork and communication, and find renewed direction in life.

It’s more than just a training program; it’s about helping young adults in La Porte find confidence, structure, and support through cooking.

Local Support, Real Impact

Cooking for Change is recognized as a paid internship through WorkOne and receives support from the LaPorte County Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative. With strong local partnerships, participants are provided with essentials like uniforms, non-slip footwear, meals, transportation, and industry-recognized certifications through Ivy Tech.

The program removes common barriers and provides both the tools and encouragement needed to succeed. Graduates leave with culinary skills, professional training, and a deeper belief in what’s possible.

At its core, Cooking for Change is about creating hope, building futures, and showing that with the right support, anyone can rewrite their story.
